Chapter Twenty-Four

Igot to the summit of Pikes Peak exhausted, my lungs burning from the thin mountain air. The trail had been treacherous in the dark, but I'd pushed myself hard, knowing that the Monsters wouldn't be far behind. The wound across my chest from The Grim Reaper stung with each breath, the blood having dried stiff against my shirt.

As I crested the final ridge, I saw them—three military-style helicopters sitting in the visitors center parking lot, their rotors already spinning. Relief flooded through me at the sight of the children near the helicopters. Rip stood by the children. Fluffy was pacing anxiously at the edge of the lot, his red eyes scanning the darkness.

When he spotted me, he bounded forward.

"Happy, happy, happy, not dead," he panted, circling me once to check for serious injuries. He came in for a proper greeting, nearly knocking me off my feet, giving me a splash bath with his giant tongue.

Captain Jack approached, her expression a mixture of relief and impatience. "You cut it close, Librarian. We were about to leave without you."

"You should have," I said, watching the children as they crossed to the helicopters.

"We have a secure hideout. It’s deep in the mountains. Even your monsters won’t find us.”

I heard the uneasiness in her voice. I’d had it in me since my fight with The Reaper. The encounter with it had confirmed what I'd feared: these demons, these Monsters of the Apocalypse, weren't going to stop hunting me. And now that Tiger had my scent, they could track me anywhere on Earth.

Maybe not anywhere not on Earth though. Maybe not, for instance, Eden. But a hideout, even in the mountains? I couldn’t chance it.

"I'm not coming with you," I said.

Captain Jack’s smile vanished. "What? That’s not the deal.”

"They're tracking me. If I go with you, I'll lead them straight to your hideout—and to the children."

"So, what? You're just going lead them off on a merry chase?" Rip asked.

“I don’t know how merry it will be,” I admitted.

“My hideout is safe,” Captain Jack said.

"Not from these demons. I’ll keep moving until the Cadillac Deville can repair itself or I can get in touch with my brother, Dread, or Lucifer. I’ve got options. Our top priority needs to be the children. I’ll be fine. And I’ll get back to you before the train job.”

Captain Jack wasn’t satisfied. She said, “I need you to fulfill your promise, or I keep the hellhound. That’s the deal. He becomes a part of my crew. He stays with me if one of those monsters kills you.”

“They won’t,” I said.

The land pirate studied me for a long moment, then sighed. "You have a few days, a week tops. You come back to this tourist spot. Someone will get word to me."

"I'll be back," I said, “after I kill them or lose them.”

Wolf approached, his face gaunt but determined. "You're staying behind?"

"I am. But I'll find you as soon as I can."

"The others won't understand. They've waited so long for rescue. Now you’re abandoning us just like every other adult we’ve ever known.
